VERSILIA AND ITINERARIES

Versilia is the most famous seaside destination on the Tuscan coast, well-known for its chic nightlife popular with celebrities who always come here not only for our beaches but especially for the nightlife in the many summer clubs.

The beach is soft and sandy, the sea slopes gently, so it is perfect for a bath with younger children, for this reason it is so popular with families with children. The beaches offer all kinds of services, beach umbrellas and sunbeds, sports fields and games for children.
The evening promenade is a whirlwind of colors, music, scents, stores and clubs open until late with the echo of the large amusement park that is set up in the city park every summer. Hotel Bixio is just a few steps away from all this, protected by the peaceful atmosphere of its garden. You can reach the center on foot or with our bikes and then at the end of the evening return to the tranquillity of our hotel and rest undisturbed.
You can reach the main destinations and typical places of this side of Tuscany from here, you can also go to the wonderful Apuan Alps or walk along the shoreline going down to Viareggio or going up north and meeting Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta up to Massa and Carrara and in just over an hour's drive you will find yourself in Cinque Terre.

CAMAIORE

The charm of an ancient village at the foot of the Apuan Alps. This is the starting point for many excursion itineraries on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback to discover the heart of Versilia.

A sightseeing tour in Camaiore is a must in the ancient heart of this part of Tuscany which holds priceless jewels of historical and artistic value among the green hills. As shown by many archaeological findings, this area was inhabited by the Etruscans and Romans while the village of Camaiore was built in the early Middle Ages. Many castles and fortified villages of the surrounding hills were also built in this period.
Just outside the center there is Badia di San Pietro, founded by the Benedictine monks, a reference point on the Via Francigena. In spite of the important renovations following two fires, the structure still retains the three original naves as well as a seventeenth-century organ. The main town square, Piazza San Bernardino, hosts the most important monuments of the town such as the town hall, the civic tower, the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta and Porta di San Pietro above which there is a large fresco of the seventeenth century depicting a Madonna and Child.

PIETRASANTA

Pietrasanta, city of marble and artists, is the cultural heart of Versilia, a land popular with Italian and international artists with a great tradition of craftsmanship which lives on in the many workshops and ateliers.

The welcoming entrance to Pietrasanta is entrusted to the pot-bellied Warrior by Fernando Botero, the Spanish artist who, like many others, gave this small village a piece of his art as a sign of gratitude. The Duomo, Palazzo Moroni, the golden facade of Sant'Agostino and Torre delle Ore all dominate the main square. The poet Giosuè Carducci was born a few kilometres from Pietrasanta and moved to the village when he was only three years old with his family and remained tied to this land which he sang about so much in his verses.
The monumental complex of Sant'Agostino is home to the Museum of Sketches which is evidence of the strong link between Pietrasanta and the world of art and which made this charming village an international reference point. The one-of-a-kind museum is home to the small-scale sketches and the real size models of completed works, made of different materials, plaster, wood, terracotta with dimensions which vary from a few centimetres to over seven meters for several tons of weight.

CARNIVAL OF VIAREGGIO

The carnival of Viareggio is considered one of the most important carnivals in Italy, Europe and the world. The whole carnival is accompanied by balls and masked parties of ancient origin.

That of Viareggio is an ancient carnival dating back to 1873, when some wealthy bourgeois decided to disguise themselves in protest to the too many taxes they were forced to pay. This is in fact the spirit that animates each edition of the parade of floats. The people vent their discontent with the facts of life of the country, celebrities and politicians, designing replicas in papier-mâché which are then paraded on large floats.
On the occasion of the Carnival of Viareggio, masked parties and big balls are always held. The color theme parties were in vogue in the 1920s. The ladies all dressed in the color dictated by the dress code also used for decorations and festoons and men wore tuxedos. Parades of amateur floats and masks on foot still take place within the neighbourhoods today and all the streets of the city are filled with colorful stalls and food stands where you can eat.

MARBLE ITINERARY

An itinerary which starts from Pietrasanta, known as “Little Athens”, up to Querceta and then Pomezzana, visiting the workshops where the greatest sculptors worked and their works left as gifts to the cities.

All the mountains of Versilia have been used since the Roman period for the extraction of marble, an activity which over the centuries contributed to change the area considerably and to enrich the national and international artistic sphere which chose this land as a precious point of reference. This activity gave life to peculiar and evocative itineraries dedicated to art and marble lovers.
It starts from Pietrasanta, among craft stores and the Museum of Sketches, which is home to drawings and paintings by artists who worked in Versilia. The next stop is Forte dei Marmi, which was once a marble deposit for international transportation. The Museum of Work and Popular Traditions of Versilia is located on the road of the marble quarries of Mount Altissimo. You cannot miss a walk along the streets of Carrara, the city of marble, with its magnificent old town and the house where Michelangelo lived.
