The museum of sketches in Pietrasanta
A collection of 700 plaster sketches of sculptures by Italian and foreign artists
The “Pierluigi Gherardi” Sketch Museum in Pietrasanta, housed in the former convent of Sant'Agostino, documents the artistic activity of sculptors who come to the city of Versilia from all over the world to create their works in the workshops.
Here are collected 700 sketches of sculptures by over 350 international artists who worked in the marble workshops and bronze foundries of Versilia. The sketch is the original idea of the sculptor and serves to understand the process from which a sculptural work is born: the sculptures made on the basis of the sketches on display in Pietrasanta are found in museums, collections and parks all over the world.
The collection represents the major names of contemporary sculpture , from Fernando Botero to Igor Mitoraj, from Niki De Saint Phalle to Giò Pomodoro, and there is a rich documentary archive on artists and craft workshops, both paper and computerized.
